Facebook Visit Notes

I recently visited the Facebook campus in Menlo Park for a week and was impressed with what I saw there. Here’s a few notes from my visit:

The Campus

  • Set up like Disney’s Main Street USA
  • Dozens of restaurants
  • Coffee shops
  • Outdoor seating with firepit
  • Large outdoor jumbotron for outside announcements / meetings
  • Free transportation to / from city
  • Bike lanes for bike riding
  • Free bikes to ride on campus
  • Bike repair shop
  • Barber shop
  • Salon
  • Video Game center
  • Candy shop
  • Gym
  • Vibrant artwork throughout campus
  • Kitchens on every floor with free snacks / drinks
  • Rooftop garden with coffee shop
  • No cubicles. Standing desks and treadmill desks available

App Dev / I.T.

  • Engineering-driven culture
  • I.T. Help Desk in every building
  • I.T. supply vending machines
  • Interactive widescreen building maps
  • Outlook used for email
  • Custom video meetings (bluejeans)
  • MacBook Pros prevalent
  • Custom Mac App Store
  • Download indie apps and well known apps (e.g. Photoshop)
  • Github’s Atom is main dev editor
  • Custom Atom plugins
  • Web-centric tools
  • Force all employees to use / test internal versions of apps (aka dogfooding)
